Once a week Maintenance

Double-Click on My Computer on your Desktop. 
Right-Click the icon for your C: drive.
Left-Click Properties

Windows 98 only:     

Left-Click Disk Cleanup

All four boxes under Files to
    delete should be checked
(Read the description of each if you
       are not sure what they are)

Left-Click OK
Left-Click Yes

Windows95 and Windows 98

With Norton Utilities

Left-Click the Norton Tab

Left-Click Check Now

When Disk Doctor is finished,

Left-Click OK

Without Norton Utilities

Left-Click the Tools Tab

Left-Click Check Now

Type of test   Standard

(Thorough test should be run about once every six months)

Automatically fix errors
should be checked.

Left-Click Start

When ScanDisk is finished you should see a message which says:

ScanDisk did not find any errors on this drive

Left-Click Close

Left-Click Close, again

Once a month Maintenance

Double-Click on My Computer on your Desktop. 
Right-Click the icon for your C: drive.
Left-Click Properties

With Norton Utilities

Left-Click the Norton Tab

Left-Click Optimize Now

When Disk Scan is finished,
Recommendation Dialog Box will appear.

Be sure full Optimization and Optimize Swap File are both checked.

Left-Click Start

When Optimization is complete, Left-Click Exit

Left-Click OK to close Properties Box

Without Norton Utilities

Left-Click the Tools Tab

Left-Click Defragment Now

Defragmenter will analyze your hard drive and tell you the fragmentation percentage.

Your C: Drive should be selected. Left-Click Start.

When Defragmenter completes you will be
asked if you want to
quit Disk Defragmenter.

If you only have one hard drive, Left-Click Yes

Otherwise Left-Click No, Select next drive Left-Click OK and then Start.
